Roles: Veggie manager, irrigation guy, fixer-of-things
Jake grew up in the Upper Valley of Vermont jumping off rope swings, biking trails to friends houses, and injuring himself in pursuit of snowboarding tricks that were totally worth it. Jake's first job was scooping poop at a local dairy farm at age 11. He started growing veggies after high school and has had his hands in the soil every season since. He didn't consider farming as a career though until after getting a degree in public policy and realizing he much preferred doing the work to making the rules about how the work should be done. No matter where he goes, Jake finds himself drawn to land and communities where people are growing and raising food with intention. In college, Jake started and managed the Campus Farm at University of Michigan (where he met his wife, Cory). From there, he briefly farmed out west, but quickly found himself pulled back to the green mountains that have always been home. Upon his return, Jake became a crew member at The Farm at VYCC - where he is now in his seventh season as farm manager. Jake is a veggie growing powerhouse at The Farm Upstream - he plans, seeds, weeds, and harvests most of the veggies in the CSAs and at the Farm Stand. Say hello next time you see him at the farm! If you've got time to kill, ask him about soil health, his hopes for our low-till future, or obscure folk-country-blues artists like Charlie Parr or Michael Hurley.Â
